This week's Sprouts edition is a production of, “The Homelessness Marathon.”

“Better Times Ahead – The Global Poverty Report”” will look at stories relating to the real-life struggles and real-life solutions poor people find every day.

In this edition, we will hear “Poverty By The Numbers,” the first of an ongoing series of reports on the numbers making poverty news. Then we will visit the waiting room of a San Francisco courthouse where poor people with eviction notices must go it alone when it come to facing the well-paid lawyers of the landlord; the bottom of a dumpster in Detroit, where a woman happily finds food for herself, her mother, her friends and sometimes hundreds of others; Detroit’s homeless shelters, where they’re seeing an erupting, unmeetable demand for their services; and to Gulf Coast Mississippi, right where Hurricane Katrina came ashore, to hear what has become of the children of the storm.
