| HOST INTRO My first lesson about our ability to change came when I was a student at Tassajara Zen Mountain Center in my twenties. A young man who was a friend of the abbot came late to training period. He arrived very depressed and overweight after having gone through a personal crisis. As soon as he settled in, he found time between meditation and work periods to start running and swimming regularly. He became careful about what and how he ate. During the weeks and months that passed, as I turned to face him at mealtimes I saw him transforming. His features became clearer and more essential as he lost weight and became more muscular. Even his eyes were different, now clear and bright. Until that time I thought that we were stuck with who we were. It changed me forever. Since then I've known that who we are is plastic and mutable. Today I'm joined by journalist Sharon Begley whose new book is about how neuroscience is learning something from Buddhist practice about changing the mind. |
